CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Kat and Hunter exchanged glances that spoke volumes of the queen's possible insanity.

Your majesty, my name is Neala.

Kat's chin nearly hit her chest.

"Neela?"

Yes, your majesty, although, Kat insists on calling me… Doris.

A surprised giggle burst from Faedra's mouth. She quickly regained her composure and pulled her lips into a straight line.

"Doris?"

Yes, your majesty.

"But-but, that's my subconscious. You can hear that?" Kat blurted.

Faedra raised her brows at the empty space before turning to look at Kat.

"I can see her, too."

See what I have been living with for nineteen years? Neala said.

"What do you mean you can see her? Hey, wait a minute…" Kat said, letting Doris's retort sink in. She aimed her glare at Faedra because that's all there was to look at. In her periphery she noticed Hunter was now scratching his head.

Faedra's lip quirked to one side and she pointed at the empty space in front of her.

"Neala is a ghost," Faedra said.

"But that-that's impossible."

"Oh, it's quite possible," Faedra said. "I'm an energy manipulator. I can see ghosts."

"Huh? No, I didn't mean that," Kat said, a worry line now forming on her temple.

"That would explain why I can't hear her," Hunter chimed in. "She's not actually your subconscious, she's just able to speak to you directly."

Kat turned to face the empty space. "Is this true?"

Yes, my dear. It's true.

"But why didn't you ever tell me?"

Would you have believed me? You couldn't see me and you had enough to deal with going through all those foster homes and dealing with your power. It was easier if you believed it was your own mind talking to you and not something else otherworldly to add to the mix.

"Who are you? Where did you come from?" Kat asked, noticing a dull throb start to manifest over her left eye.

I'll explain all that later. I think you've had quite enough to deal with for one day.

One day? Kat thought. I think I've had quite enough to deal with for an entire lifetime.

"Oh, God. I need to sit down, this is too much to take in," Kat placed a palm on her forehead.

Faedra gestured for Etyran to bring over one of the reading chairs. A moment later, he was placing it behinds Kat's legs.

"There you go," he said.

"Thanks," Kat murmured, offering the queen and Etyran a weak smile.

"You look exhausted," Faedra said. "Why don't you both go and rest a while and we can continue this later. Believe me, I know how much of a strain this can be. Been there, done that, as they say."

Kat's brow pinched at the queen's words.

"Erin, Callie," Faedra called.

In the next instant, a door opened in the back of the room. Two young women walked in, although, Kat could swear they looked like they were floating. She squinted to make sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her. The two women, who wore long pinafore-style aprons over light-as-a-feather tulle dresses, came to a stop in front of the queen and curtsied.

"Yes, your majesty," they said in unison.

Faedra cast Kat a sideways glance and a smile that said 'see what I mean?'.
